How To Protect Your Home’s Exterior From Water Damage

Protect your home’s exterior from serious ice and water damage.

Winter is slowly approaching meaning there is the potential for severe weather, such as snow and hail, impacting your home.  The exterior of your home, including your roof and siding, is supposed to protect you from the elements and everyday wear and tear.  Although, if your home is not secured properly, then water can easily seep in and cause damage.  The last thing you want to deal with is leaky roof or mold forming on your walls.  Fortunately, there a few simple ways you can protect your home’s exterior from water damage.

Clean Your Gutters

One of the most effective ways to prevent water from damaging your home and leaving you with costly repairs is to clean your gutters.  You should get on a ladder and clean your gutters of leaves and debris at least twice a year.  If your gutter is clogged when rain or snow falls, then water can overflow onto your home siding.  Make sure your downspouts can lead water at least five feet or more from your home’s foundation.  Water damage can cause your siding to warp and unable to protect your family from the elements.

Check Your Roof

It is vital that you inspect your roof occasionally especially before the chilly months of winter.  Inspect your roof for any broken or damaged shingles or flashings that could let water penetrate your home.  Check any air conditioning units or special equipment that are installed on your roof for any leaks or cracks.  You should trim any branches that are close or hanging directly over your roof.  A branch could latch onto a shingle and trap in moisture causing permanent water damage.

Seal Windows

No one wants to deal with water leaking through their windows because they didn’t take the time to seal them properly.  Check your windows for any cracks or leaks, and make sure that the flashing is layered properly.  Flashing should be installed to guide water downward.
