Potential Signs That Your Roof Needs Replacement

Roof replacement is not something that many homeowners think about until a leak happens.

Roof replacement is not something that many homeowners think about until a leak happens. Were you aware that there are other significant indicators to let you know that your roof needs replacement? If your roof is experiencing water damage, drafts, or is more than two decades old,  then, you should enlist a contractor to fix or possibly replace your roof altogether. Keep reading for details on signs that you need your roof reconstructed.

1) The Shingles on Your Roof are Cracked, Curled, or Cupped

After an intense storm hits and it’s safe to do so, looking on the top of your roof to make sure that your shingles aren’t damaged is significant. Your shingles should always lie flat against your roof. If you find shingle granules in the gutters or downspouts, then this may be an indicator that your roof is losing its value.

2) Check the Flashing on Your Skylights, Vents, and Chimneys

Flashing is a protective layer that seals the seams around the skylights, vents, and chimneys and prevents water damage or other elements. Check to make sure that the flashing has no dents or cracks in it. A lot of older homes use cement or tar flashing but adding metal to your flashing can help with durability.

3) A Sagging, Rotted Roof is a Big Problem

If this describes your roof, then you need it fixed immediately. A roof that sags or is rotting and mildewy will cause other problems in the home. If you’re unsure that your roof is sagging, then you can check the surface for trapped moisture or boards that may have rotted, especially at the lowest parts of the roof.

4) A Massive Amount of Moss

Moss may be great for your landscape, but it shouldn’t be on your roof. Moss carries mold and fungi. You can use a stiff brush to remove the moss but make sure that you pay attention to more critical indicators. Moss could mean that your roof has water damage which you indeed want to take care of right away.

5) Is Your House Over Twenty Years Old

Twenty years is a long time, and it’s normal for a lot to happen to a roof within this period. Inspect your roof to see if it’s as sturdy and durable as it was twenty years ago. Most likely not, so contact us here at Phil Dibello Family Roofing to help make sense of all your roofing needs.
