3 Ways To Prepare Your Home For Winter

Learn how to prepare your home for winter.

November is officially here, which means the frigid winter season is right around the corner.  Before winter comes, it is essential that you prepare your home for freezing low temperatures and potential snow storms.  The last thing you want is for heavy snow to cause a leak in your roof leaving you with serious water damage.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to prepare your home for winter.

Weather Stripping Is Essential

Once the cold winter arrives, you want to ensure that the warm air in your home stays inside at all costs.  One of the most effective ways to seal warm air inside your home is to invest in weather stripping. All you have to do is install weather stripping around your windows and doors to prevent air leaks.  You can purchase weather stripping at any local hardware store. It is important that you are also checking your vents and air conditioning units for leaks.

Keep Your Gutters Clean

When it comes to preparing your home for winter, you need to keep your gutters clean and clear of any debris.  Right now is the perfect time to clear out your gutters before any potential snowfall. The last thing you want is for your gutters to be clogged during a snowstorm, leading the snow to freeze and causing serious damage to your home.  So, it is best that you take a ladder and use a scooping device to clear out any leaves and debris from your gutters.

Check Your Roof

One of the most important ways to prepare your home for winter is to check your roof so that you can prevent ice dams.  If your roof is not properly ventilated and insulated, then heat can escape during the winter, which can cause ice to melt and refreeze on your roof leading to ice dams.  You want to make sure your attic is well insulated to prevent excessive heat transfer from your living space up to your attic.
