How To Prepare Your Skylight For Winter

skylights

Prepare your skylight for winter sooner rather than later.

Installing a skylight in your home will benefit you and your family throughout the whole year even in the winter when you will receive minimal sunlight.  Natural sunlight exposure is shown to improve mood and overall wellness in individuals.  The best way to sustain the benefits of your skylight is to take care of it well, and right now is the perfect time to perform some seasonal maintenance tasks before winter arrives.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to prepare your skylight for winter so that you can fully enjoy it once spring comes around.

Inspect and Check

One of the first steps in preparing your skylight for winter is to inspect the whole structure thoroughly for any cracks or other damages.  You should check the drywall that surrounds your skylight for any leaks.  Even though leaks are a common occurrence amongst skylight owners, you should seal them up with flashing or caulking.  Make sure to check the glass of your skylight for any cracks and inspect any gears for malfunctions.  If you notice damage to your skylight, contact the professionals at Phil Dibello Roofing to repair it for you promptly.

Clean the Glass

When cleaning your skylight, make sure to clear any debris and dirt from the exterior side, and if you are unable to do so, contact the professionals at Phil Dibello Roofing.  You should clean your skylight on a cool day so you can the heat negatively affecting you.  Clean your glass skylight with mild soap and water, removing all dirt and stains.  Make sure to use a lint-free cloth to wipe with after washing the glass.  Do not use any objects that have sharp edges to clean your glass because they have the potential to scratch and damage it.

Don’t Forget The Frame

Make sure not to forget to clean the frames of your skylight when preparing it for winter.  Depending on the type of material your frame is made of, you will have to clean it with products that are made for that specific material.  If it is a wooden frame, you should add a finishing product to enhance its appearance.
