Choosing windows for your home goes far beyond aesthetics. You want to make sure that they’re energy-efficient as well. Why does this matter? For one, what homeowner doesn’t want to save money on their energy bill? Two, fall is here, and colder weather is coming. Energy-efficient windows keep cold air out so that your home will be nice and toasty. Here at Phil DiBello Family Roofing, our contractors are roofing experts, but they specialize in window installation and window replacement as well. Not sure if your windows are energy-efficient? Then, keep reading. Here, we’ll share four signs that will help you figure this out.
The U-Factor determines how much heat transfers through a material. Your windows are energy-efficient if there is a low U-rating. A low U-rating means that heat flows slowly through the window and provides better insulation. To look this up, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) has a rating system as it relates to most windows.
When it comes to insulation, vinyl framing is usually the best. Insulated vinyl framing protects against heat transfer and air leakage. If you have wooden or aluminum framing, then it may be time for a window replacement. If general, if you feel drafts in your home, then call us. We offer complimentary consultations.
Double pane windows are more energy-efficient by far. Also, thicker layers of glass panes provide more insulation from exterior elements. The space between two panes reduces heat transfer as well as prevents condensation buildup on your windows.
The three signs mentioned above are simple to detect. However, there are advanced technologies added to windows that may not be as simple for you to notice. These include heat-resistant, or Low-E and reflective coatings. Some tints absorb heat (think about a car as a reference), and there are also gas fills available that will enhance thermal efficiency.
If your windows passed the test, then congratulations! You can look forward to a comfortable fall and winter with savings galore. If not, then all hope is not lost. We’ll offer you window replacement at a fair and affordable price.
