3 Simple Gutter Maintenance Tips To Follow This Fall

gutters

Learn how to care for your gutters this fall.

We are entering the beginning of fall, which is known for an influx of storms and potentially dangerous hurricanes.  You need to ensure that your home, especially your gutters, can stand up to all of the elements during hurricane season.  This is the time when you need to check your gutters and make sure that rain water can flow through your gutters easily.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips to caring for your gutters this fall.

Clear It Out

One of the most effective ways to care for your gutters during the fall is to clear leaves and debris.  Since it has the potential to rain heavily this fall, the last thing you want is for your gutters to be clogged with leaves and other natural materials.  A clogged gutter can cause rain to overflow onto the sides of your home, which can lead to serious water damage. So, you need to take a ladder and scoop out your gutters carefully.  It is best to rinse out your gutters with a hose after cleaning to ensure water can flow easily.

Inspect For Leaks

The last thing you want is for your gutters to have leaks and for water to spill on your siding and foundation.  So, you need to inspect your structure for leaks and any other kind of structural damage. Take a garden hose and release water to see if any of it drips out of the sides or bottom of the gutters.  You can fix any minor holes with sealant or cement from your local hardware store. The professionals at Phil Dibello Roofing can fix any major leaks in your gutters.

Check The Alignment

When caring for your gutters this fall, you want to check the alignment of the structure.  You want to ensure your gutters are straight and there isn’t a pool of water in one spot. Make sure that water is flowing smoothly and far away from the foundation of your home.  You want to ensure that water is flowing at least 10 feet away from your home through the downspout.
