Protecting Your Home From Snow & Ice Damage

More than likely, the main focus of your home in the winter is to stay as warm as possible by keeping the cold outside. However, you must also be focusing on trying to protect your home this winter from potential snow and ice damage. There is no certain way to tell just how much snow this winter will bring, but regardless, your home should be prepared for the potential damage the snow and cold can cause to it. Here are tips to protect your home this winter, as well as a few things you should be keeping an eye on.

Roof

Whenever there is snowfall, you should keep an eye on the roof of your home. Even though you probably made sure to invest in a durable roof, during the winter, it is easy for a roof to become overloaded with heavy snowfall. This can unfortunately damage it quite severely, even potentially causing it to collapse. This is why during the winter you should be monitoring your roof. Keep an eye out to see if it is sagging at all, and listen in your home for popping or cracking noises coming from it. You can help clear some snow from your roof with a snow rake, but it is usually best to call upon a professional roofer to help remove the heavy snow on your roof.

Gutters

Gutter maintenance is also an important part of keeping your home free from snow and ice damage in the winter. When snow falls and melts during the day, it tends to freeze again at night when it is still going down your gutters. This creates an ice dam. An ice dam clogs your gutters, causing water to back up under the line of the roof of your home, causing damage. The best way to avoid this is by making sure you are keeping your gutters clean by removing any debris that could be found in them.

Pipes

When water freezes in your pipes, it expands and can cause the pipes in your home to crack or burst. This can cause an immense amount of damage to your home and needs to be avoided at all costs during the winter. First, you will want to drain any water from your outdoor faucets and sprinklers. You can also add insulation to your pipes that go through unheated interiors of your home, like a garage or basement.
