3 Simple Ways To Conserve Energy This Winter

The official start of winter is almost here and outdoor temperatures are already dropping.  The winter season brings freezing and snowy weather, which will make you turn up the heat in your home.  However, you want to ensure that your home is running properly so that you are not wasting energy and running up your utility bill this winter.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips you can follow so that you can be as energy efficient as possible during the winter.

Focus On Your Windows

When it comes to conserving energy this winter, you want to focus on your windows so that you can prevent leaks and drafts.  During the day, it is best if you leave your windows uncovered so that you can let as much sunlight in to heat your home naturally.  At night, make sure that you keep your windows covered with blinds or drapes to combat any drafts. You can invest in quilted curtains to prevent drafts from occurring.  If you really want to combat heat loss, then you should install storm windows over your single-paned windows. Low-e storm windows can reduce heat loss by 50 percent.

Go Into The Attic

If you want to prevent leaks and drafts during the winter, then you need to start in the attic.  An attic is attached to home’s roof, so if the space isn’t insulated properly then heat can escape very easily, which can lead to energy loss and increased utility bills.  So, it important that you go into your attic and add as much insulation as needed.  You should also seal any leaks with caulking to prevent heat loss.

Invest In An Energy Audit

An important task you should complete this winter is investing in an energy audit for your home.  You can request an energy audit from your utility company and they will come in and assess your home.  They will give you a detailed report of what upgrades need to be made so that you can prevent heat loss in your home.
