How To Care For Your Home Windows

As a homeowner, you want to make sure your home is in exceptional condition throughout the year.  Summer is the perfect time to perform some seasonal maintenance tasks around your property.  Make sure you are spending time caring for your windows so that your home can be as secure and energy efficient as possible.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips to care for your home windows so that you can keep them in pristine condition.

Inspect and Repair

One of the major elements of window maintenance consists of inspecting your windows every season, especially if you have traditional wooden frames.  There has been an excess of rainfall in the Baltimore area, so you should be checking and inspecting your home windows. Excess moisture can cause wooden frames to rot and warp.  If you have double or triple-paned window frames, check to see if there is excess moisture which is points to you replacing the seal.

Cleaning

The way you clean your home windows depends on the window frame material.  If you have wooden windows, then clean them with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.  If you have vinyl windows, then you can clean the frames with a mild detergent and a scrub brush to get rid of any built-up debris.  You can use a standard glass cleaner to make sure your windows have a sparkling finish.

Seal and Paint

When it comes to maintaining your home windows, you need to check on the sealing in between the glass and frame.  If there are any gaps around your window, then outside air can come into your home which reduces the energy efficiency of your home.  This loss of warm air can actually lead to high utility costs. So, it is critical that you fill any gaps with spray insulation or sealant as soon as possible.  If you have wooden or metal windows, you should be re-painting the frames every three to four years.
