3 Tips To Preparing Your Windows For Winter

Winter is a few weeks away meaning that it is the perfect time to prepare your home for cold temperatures and potential snowfall.  You need to focus on your windows when preparing your home for winter because they can raise your energy bill.  According to the Department of Energy, home windows account for around 30 percent of heat loss during the winter.  Luckily, there a few simple ways to prepare and protect your windows so that heat stays in your home and your energy bill doesn’t rise.

Sealing

One of the most effective ways to prepare your windows for winter is to seal any leaks or drafts that is letting heat out of your home.  You first need to inspect your windows for any damage or cracks that are letting cold air into your home.  If you have old caulking installed around your windows, then dig out the material with a screwdriver and replace with new caulking.  Make sure to seal all leaks around the exterior of your windows with caulking.

Storm Windows

If you want to prevent air from moving into your home through your single pane window, then you should invest in storm windows.  Storm windows come in a variety of styles and material from plastic sheets to glass.  They can be installed for a specific amount of time or permanently depending on your home.  Storm windows can be installed at the interior or exterior of your home, and are very simple to clean.

Weather Stripping

If you want to prevent heat loss on moving parts of your windows, then you need to invest in weather stripping.  It comes in a wide range of materials from felt to metal to vinyl.  You may be able to install weather stripping yourself depending on the material you choose for your windows.  One of the most effective materials to seal air leaks is a magnet.
