How to Cool Your Attic During the Summer

Keeping an Attic Cool

The temperature of your attic can greatly influence the temperature of the rest of your home. Keep it cool with these tips!

While you may not think about it regularly, your attic can have a significant impact on the interior temperature of your entire home. If your attic is keeping your home warmer than it should be, it’s probably time to consider making some changes. Not only will these upgrades help to keep your home more comfortable, but they can help increase the lifespan of your roof as well.

Consider Roof Color

The color of your roof is a tricky subject, especially in Maryland, where our winters can be just as cold as our summers are hot. In warm climates, a light-colored roof is recommended, while cold climates benefit from darker colors. For a Maryland home, a shade in the middle is the best bet as it keeps your home from absorbing too much heat in summer without losing the full benefits in winter.

Vent It Out

Every home attic should have ventilation to allow it to push the warm air out. In the case of a working ventilation system, natural airflow allows cooler air to enter to keep the space dry while reducing temperatures. There are many different types of attic ventilation systems, and depending on the size and age of your home, it may be time for an upgrade to help ensure the system works as it should.

Insulation Upgrade

Last but not least, consider the insulation in your home’s attic. No matter the season, having the proper insulation in your home will make a massive difference in how well it holds a consistent temperature. If your home has little or no insulation, you’re probably overspending on utilities and working your HVAC unit harder than you need to! Upgrading your insulation can make a massive difference to your comfort level and your utility bills.
