If eyes are the windows to the soul, does that mean that windows are the eyes of the house? In a way, yes, since windows are the primary way we allow natural light into our homes, and they play a major role in the curb appeal of the house. However, windows that are rundown, damaged, or just worn out can negatively affect the comfort and security of your home. If your windows are original to your home, and your home is more than 20 years old, it is probably time for an upgrade. However, there are more reasons than just that to consider replacing your windows.
If your window frames are decaying, because they’ve been exposed to moisture or other damage, it is time to get them replaced. Even if you can’t see the damage or decay, it could still be there causing your windows to leak. During rainstorms, you may find actual water leaking in through your windows. But when it isn’t raining, those leaks are still allowing the winter air in and your warm air to leak out. This is damaging the energy efficiency of your home and likely hurting your wallet. New windows will fix this.
Your windows should open and close smoothly, without you having to feel like you’ve been lifting weights at the gym. If you have windows that are painted or swollen shut, you should definitely replace them – in an emergency, it is good to know that all of your windows could be an exit point. If your windows are very hard to open, or they won’t stay open on their own, it is time to upgrade them.
No windows are going to be totally soundproofed, but older windows offer less insulation from the noise outside than newer ones do. If all your windows are closed tight and you can still hear cars driving by outside or the trash truck when it is still around the corner, it may be time to get new windows.
Foggy windows are usually a sign of condensation in between the two panes of glass. This is not the same as condensation on the surface, which is a result of the moist inside air reacting to the cold surface of the window. Condensation between the panes is an indication that the seals of the window have failed and if they’re not leaking yet they will be soon.
