How To Care For The Exterior Of Your Home This Fall

siding by james hardie

Follow these simple exterior maintenance tips this fall!

Summer is coming to an end, which means it will be getting cool and windy outside.  As a homeowner, fall is all about making sure your home is in shape to withstand the inclement weather of winter.  The last thing you want is for a rain storm or potential snow damaging your roof.  Luckily, there a few exterior maintenance tasks you can perform this fall so that your home is in tip-top shape!

Trim Your Trees

When it comes to caring for the exterior of your home, you need to start with your trees.  You want to trim any branches that are hanging over or near your home. The last thing you want is for a branch to break off into your home during a storm.  Make sure that you are removing any branches that are dead or dying. If you notice a tree that is dead, make sure to get it professionally removed.

Check For Leaks

One of the most important tasks to accomplish during the fall is to seal any window or door leaks.  If you have had your windows or doors for several years, it is common for the framing to develop small gaps.  However, it is critical that you are sealing any gaps with caulking or weather stripping. Having leaks around your doors or windows wastes energy and can increase your utility bills.

Clean Out Gutters

During the fall, it is important that you are cleaning out your gutters on a consistent basis.  Since leaves and other debris fall into your gutters, you want to prevent them from clogging up your system.  The last thing you want is for water to overflow onto your home’s foundation after it rains, which can lead to serious water damage that can be costly to repair.  So, make sure that you are taking a scoop and clear out any debris that is in your gutters.
